International Summer School

Medical Augmented Reality Summer School 2025

From August 11th to 20th, 2025, the 5th edition of the Medical Augmented Reality Summer School will be held at Balgrist University Hospital in Zurich, Switzerland, again bringing together the world's experts in Medical AR, clinicians, companies and talented academic researchers from all around the world, foster cooperation, and push the boundaries of Medical Augmented Reality. The application will be open to researchers from academia, medical professionals and students, as well as industry engineers.

The focus of this year's summer school will be the connection of Medical AR and Surgical Data Science. MARSS25 will be organized for the first time by a consortium of scientists and clinicians from three institutions which are among the leading centers for cutting-edge research in Medical Augmented Reality, Computer Vision, and Computer Assisted Surgery:

  • Prof. Dr. Philipp Fürnstahl and Prof. Mazda Farshad, MD, Balgrist University Hospital, Zurich, Switzerland,
  • Prof. Dr. Nassir Navab, Technical University Munich, Munich, Germany, and
  • Prof. Dr. Marc Pollefeys, ETH Zurich, Zurich, Switzerland,

In the MARSS25 hackathon, interdisciplinary teams consisting of participants from research, industry, and clinic will develop novel Medical Augmented Reality systems, supported by experienced surgeons and AR experts. For MARSS25 and the MARSS25 hackathon, we will have access to our translational center for surgery, the OR-X, a highly technological equipped research and training infrastructure where surgical innovation and education can happen without patient burden.

For medical professionals, we will for the first time offer a hands-on surgical training course at OR-X in parallel to the technical program that includes the training of surgical techniques using cutting-edge computer assisted surgery systems such as surgical navigation systems, endoscopic procedures, and robot-assisted surgery on bone models. The medical hands-on course will comply with official medical course requirements.

We actively promote diversity in terms of gender and region and provide a free registration award for selected students.

This event is endorsed by the MICCAI society and covered by the MICCAI Code of Conduct.

Application Process

Please submit your application through the form below. The official registration deadline for technical researchers has been extended to June 27th, 2025. The deadline for the medical track including the hands-on surgical training course at OR-X has been extended to July 15th, 2025.
Your application will be reviewed, and you will receive feedback by the end of June 2025. In case of acceptance, we will send you a personal link to finalize your registration. Your definitive participation is confirmed with the payment of the conference fee which will be:

  • 400 CHF (without accommodation) / 800 (with accommodation) for technical and medical researchers
  • 5000 CHF for industry participants (without accommodation)

MEDICAL PARTICIPANTS ONLY: Please indicate in the application form if you are interested to participate in the medical hands-on training course taking place at OR-X from August 11 - 13. The participation in the medical hands-on training course requires an additional course registration fee of 300 CHF.
